Live-in Activity Instructor   Job Summary

A Live-in Activity Instructor's primary role is to plan and deliver daily activity programs (ex. Creative, Athletics, Adventure and Waterfront). Instructors are also responsible for the safety, security and well being of all campers participating in that specific activity. This position involves indirect supervision of General Counsellors assisting with the activity. Live-in Instructors secondary role is to assume the responsibilities of a general counsellor position when required. As a General Counsellor they will attend, participate and deliver camp programming and ensure campers are happy.

Reporting Structure

Live-in Instructors report directly to the On-Campus Coordinator and report indirectly to the Off-Campus Coordinator, Camp Director and to Head Office.

Desired Qualifications

  • College diploma or undergraduate degree studies (Human Kinetics, Education or Recreation Management) or 2 - 3 years relevant experience
  • Coaching or Instructor certification preferred
  • Experience with teaching or coaching children within the age range of 7 to 17
  • Participate in and assist with evening programs & excursions (ex. Disco night, Talent Show, Ice Skating, Bowling)
  • Good interpersonal and problem solving skills, ability to work independently and within a team
  • Ability to work under pressure with changing priorities and to meet deadlines
  • High levels of energy, enthusiasm and motivation required
  • Strong leadership abilities and confidence managing large groups
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and deal with sensitive issues with tact and discretion
  • Must have valid Basic First Aid and CPR C certification by June 1

Work performed

  • Activity Instructor Role
    • Teaches skill development to campers
    • Manages and maintains equipment inventory
    • Ensures the activity site is safe at all times
    • Completes pre and post camp inventories of all equipment
    • Completes lesson plans on a weekly basis and submits them to the On Campus Coordinator
    • Submits Activity Report and final feedback evaluation at the end of contract
  • General Counsellor Role
    • Supervises campers; in residence, at activities, on excursions and during meal times
    • Ensures campers are prepared and on time for activities
    • Assists with night duty and on call duty as assigned
    • Attends all meetings as scheduled by the Camp Administrative Team (ex. Morning Huddle)
    • Promotes the English Only Policy
    • Monitors campers' health including nutrition, hydration, sun protection and over all wellness
    • Attends and participates in all camp activities and events
    • Ensures camper inclusion within counsellor group and the camp community
    • Creates and delivers camp programming (ex. Conversation Club and Talent Shows)
    • Generates and maintains camper enthusiasm for English classes, activities and other special events
    • Assists with camper arrival and departure procedures
    • Prepares campers for Counsellor Group daily activities
    • Active participation in pre and post camp periods
    • Completion of accident, incident and discipline report forms as required
    • Administers first aid as required
    • Adheres to all Tamwood Policies and Procedures as outlined in Staff Manual
    • Attends all meals while on duty
    • Wears the camp t-shirt at all times while on duty
    • Performs other duties as needed
