Camp Director   Job Summary

The Camp Director is responsible for the following key areas:

  • Responsible for managing all safety procedures and ensuring the safety and security of all campers, group leaders and staff
  • Responsible for overseeing the successful execution of all daily operations
  • Developing the staff team dynamic while ensuring all staff adhere to Tamwood policies and procedures
  • Main contact between Tamwood Head Office and Camp personnel
  • Other responsibilities as required

Reporting Structure

The Director reports to the Camps Manager at Head Office and works in collaboration with the Camp Administrative team including Coordinators, Director of Studies, Counsellors, Instructors and support staff. The Camp Director is responsible for the supervision of all camp personnel.

Desired Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or relevant experience in recreation management or educational leadership
  • A minimum of two years experience in a leadership or supervisory role
  • Previous Tamwood or summer camp experience an asset
  • Proven ability to delegate responsibility and coordinate a staff team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including telephone and email correspondence
  • Confident and enthusiastic public speaking skills
  • Have the ability to maintain confidentiality and deal with sensitive issues with tact and discretion
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills, ability to work independently and within a team
  • Ability to work under pressure with changing priorities and to meet deadlines
  • Extensive experience working with children and supervising staff
  • MS Office experience (advanced excel and word)
  • Must hold a valid unrestricted driving license
  • Must have valid First Aid and CPR C certifications by June 1st.

Work performed

  • Operations
    • Assist in setting up and closing of the camp location including all Tamwood signage
    • Oversee execution of camper arrival and departure days, including intake procedures
    • Ensure camp inventories are performed pre and post camp, and submitted to Head Office
    • Execute the camp activity programme and ensure it is of highest quality
    • Produce reports as instructed by Head Office
    • Submit final report & inventories of supplies at the end of the summer
    • Know all emergency procedures (fire, earthquake, thunderstorms, etc) and direct evacuations as needed
    • Complete daily task list
    • Perform other duties as needed

  • Staff Supervision
    • Manage all members of the Camp Office Administration and Camp Health Attendant
    • Ensure Director of Studies executes student graduation ceremonies on a weekly basis
    • Ensure high standards are met by staff for every detail of the camp program
    • Create staff time off schedule and ensure all staff are getting adequate rest to do their jobs
    • Create and help execute all evening programming (ex. Disco night, Talent Show, Amazing Race)
    • Conduct daily meetings for staff (ex. morning huddle)
    • Brief staff daily for upcoming on-campus programming & leads other meetings as required
    • Generate enthusiasm amongst the staff for programmed activities
    • Provide direction in regards to completing camper discipline reports
    • Conduct and submit mid-summer and final staff performance evaluations and administer staff survey
    • Oversee and ensure proper execution of night duty and on-call duty

  • Financial
    • Submit weekly payroll and supply orders to Head Office
    • Responsible for petty cash disbursement with the Office Administrator
    • Maintain accurate accounts, keeping within budgets and providing full receipts and detailed records of expenditures (ex. purchase orders)

  • Communications
    • Liaise on a daily basis with Head Office, Agency Group Leaders, Vendors and administrative team
    • Schedule meeting with Agency Group Leaders on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
    • Manage all client complaints in a timely manner (campers, parents, Group Leaders) and relay to Head Office
    • Ensure any camper health issues and incident reports are communicated to Head Office daily
    • Write Director report, administer final staff survey and other paperwork as needed
    • Lead occasional camp facility tours for agents or parents
