Director of ESL Studies   Job Summary

The Director of Studies is responsible for the following key areas:

  • Responsible for overseeing the successful execution of the English program
  • Responsible for overseeing and monitoring teacher performance, including staff evaluations
  • Teaching English classes when necessary
  • Main contact between Tamwood Head Office and teaching staff

Reporting Structure

The Director of ESL Studies reports to the Camp Director and works in collaboration with the Camp Administrative team including Coordinators, Counsellors and support staff. The Director of ESL Studies is responsible for the supervision of all ESL teachers.

Desired Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Education or other relevant discipline and ESL teacher training
  • A minimum of two years experience in a leadership or supervisory role
  • Previous Tamwood teaching experience an asset
  • Extensive experience working with children and supervising staff
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including telephone and email correspondence
  • Have the ability to maintain confidentiality and deal with sensitive issues with tact and discretion
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills, ability to work independently and within a team
  • Ability to work under pressure with changing priorities and to meet deadlines
  • MS Office experience (advanced excel and word)
  • Must have valid First Aid and CPR C certifications by June 1st.

Work performed

  • Administration
    • Assist with pre-camp staff hiring and responsible for all hires once the camp season has begun
    • Creation of student graduation folders, including certificates and progress reports
    • Assist in setting up and closing of the camp location
    • Ensure teaching material inventories are performed pre and post camp, and submitted to Head Office
    • Creation of weekly class lists and administer English placement tests to new students
    • Managing all aspects of graduation ceremonies
    • Execute the English program and ensure it is of highest quality
    • Manage all classroom related student discipline issues
    • Produce reports as instructed by Head Office
    • Submit final report & inventories of supplies at the end of the summer
    • Oversee execution of camper arrival and departure days, including
    • Complete daily task list
    • Performs other duties as needed, such as occasional teaching on off-peak weeks

  • Staff Supervision
    • Plan and facilitate all teacher training sessions
    • Approve teacher lesson plans and ensure Tamwood curriculum is followed
    • Create class lists and assign teachers
    • Conduct weekly staff meetings and brief staff daily as needed
    • Generate enthusiasm amongst the teaching staff
    • Provide staff with direction in regards to student welfare and support
    • Conduct and submit mid-summer and final staff performance evaluations

  • Financial
    • Submit weekly payroll and supply orders to Head Office
    • Ensuring staff to student ratios meet targeted budgets

  • Communications
    • Liaise on a daily basis with Head Office, Group Leaders, Vendors and Camp Office Administration
    • Ensure any camper health issues and incident reports are communicated to Head Office daily
    • Write Director of ESL Studies report, administer final staff survey and other paperwork as needed
    • Promote the English only environment
    • Lead occasional camp facility tours for agents or parents
