Recreation Management Program in Vancouver

This program is designed for students to consider the field of Recreation as a career. With coursework in program management, business management, recreation administration, and related youth recreation specialty courses, the Recreation Management program helps prepare students to become leaders in the recreation and leisure services industry. The program offers experiential and interdisciplinary learning opportunities that may include real-world event management experience, recreation programming simulation, inclusive recreation programming, job shadow assignments, guest speakers, volunteer assignments, site visits to recreation facilities, and applied research.

The Recreation Management Co-op Diploma Program is ideally suited to international students and Canadian newcomers. The program will combine all facets of recreation from administration, communication, program development, Canadian culture programming, business management, and training in the use of field-specific language and terminology.

Recreation Management Courses Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, successful students will have reliably demonstrated the ability in field of recreation, youth programming, critical thinking and decision making, risk management, program planning, inclusion and diversity, basic standard first aid and career planning.

Admission Requirements

Minimum Age: 18 Years

Education: Secondary school graduation or equivalent.

No Criminal Record (police check required)

Language Skills: Minimum 65% in either English 12, English Studies 12, English First Peoples 12, ENGL 090, or equivalent.

Or
Successful completion of three consecutive full-time years of secondary school and/or post-secondary education taught in the English language in a country where English is the principal language.

Countries from which education in English is accepted:

  • Canada, the U.S.A., U.S. Virgin Islands, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Tanzania, and Ireland
  • Singapore, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Jamaica, and the Philippines

Or
International Students must demonstrate intermediate level English with Tamwood Careers’ online test and interview. The online test and interview are exempt if CEFR B2, IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 46, Cambridge FCE (C), Tamwood Language Centre’s high intermediate level or proof of successful completion of Tamwood Language Centre EAP 192 is presented.

Graduates of this program can enter the workforce in public recreation services, commercial recreation, non-profit organizations, college/university recreation departments, resorts/outdoor camps, recreation facility administration, and inclusive recreation programs: Community Recreation Leader, Summer Camp Manager, Summer Camp Division Head, Summer Camp Activity Director, Youth Program Manager, Youth Program Coordinator, Outdoor Education Leader, Guest Services Manager, Before and After School Educator.

Co-op Work Experience

All students complete a valuable 240-hour work placement as part of this program.  Work placements will be in organizations and in positions that allow students to gain experience in the field of youth recreation and/or education.  Tamwood staff work with students to support them in securing their co-op work placement through workshops on resume writing, interview skills and networking skills and through job leads and coaching.
