Youth Recreation Leadership and Communication Co-op Diploma Program in Vancouver
This program is designed for students to consider the field of recreation as a career with a focus on youth, including additional insight into western education and culture specific communication. Students will explore using a hands-on approach how to enhance experiences in recreation, sports, and leisure that foster inclusivity, community, and more resilient youth. Students will learn critical thinking, decision-making, and risk management skills that empower them to lead effectively and respond to challenges.
The Youth Recreation and Leadership and Communication Co-op Diploma Program is ideally suited to international students and Canadian newcomers as it includes Canadian communication and culture courses. Through these added communication courses students will enhance their communication skill development, gain an overview of Canadian education culture, and learn the business and academic-specific terminology.

Youth Recreation Leadership and Communication Program Courses Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, successful students will have reliably demonstrated the ability to youth programming, critical thinking and decision making, risk management, program planning, inclusion and diversity, basic standard first aid and career planning, culture understanding and sensitivity, language, communication, and professional presentation skills.
Admission Requirements
Minimum Age: 18 Years
Education: Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
No Criminal Record (police check required)
Language Skills: Minimum 65% in either English 12, English Studies 12, English First Peoples 12, ENGL 090, or equivalent.
Or
Successful completion of three consecutive full-time years of secondary school and/or post-secondary education taught in the English language in a country where English is the principal language.
Countries from which education in English is accepted:
- Canada, the U.S.A., U.S. Virgin Islands, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Tanzania, and Ireland
- Singapore, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Jamaica, and the Philippines
Or
Language Skills: International students must demonstrate intermediate level English with Tamwood Careers’ online test and interview. The online test and interview are exempt if CEFR B1, IELTS 4.5, TOEFL iBT 31, Cambridge PET (Merit) or Tamwood Language Centre’s intermediate level is presented, or proof of successful completion of Tamwood Business Communication Couse A, B and C in Tamwood Careers.
*Students who need to improve their English skills before getting admitted to this program can take English courses at Tamwood Language Centres.

Graduates of this program will be prepared for a variety of positions in the field of youth recreation, including (but not limited to) Community Recreation Facilitator, Summer Camp Counselor, Summer Camp Activity Specialist, Youth Program Assistant, Youth Program Coordinator, Outdoor Education Assistant, Guest Services Coordinator, Resort Activity Facilitator, Before and After School Educator
Co-op Work Experience
All students complete a valuable 240-hour work placement as part of this program. Work placements will be in organizations and in positions that allow students to gain experience in the field of youth recreation and/or education. Tamwood staff work with students to support them in securing their co-op work placement through workshops on resume writing, interview skills and networking skills and through job leads and coaching.
